Cairo synaoguge bombing does not alarm local Jews Israelis living in Cairo and the small local Jewish community told Israeli media that they were not alarmed by Sunday's bombing of a prominent synagogue in the Egyptian capital. In the attack, an Egyptian Arab man hurled a homemade bomb consisting of several gas canisters at the entrance of the synagogue. There were no injuries in the attack. Due to the miniscule number of Jews remaining in Egypt, the synagogue is no longer used as a daily place of worship, though it does host Jewish holiday events. Local Jews and resident Israelis said they did not view the attack as reason to take any additional precautions, noting that they have long known Egypt is not the most friendly place for a Jew to live. While Egypt is officially at peace with Israel, state-controlled media organs regularly incite hatred against the Jewish state and the Jews in general. |
